Every fall New York agrees on a running uniform without anyone saying it out loud. I run twice a day, mostly alone, mostly early, and I pass a lot of people. This is what they’re wearing right now, and what I’m buying to fit in without looking like I’m trying to.

Quick context on why the city dresses like this: the brands moved here. Tracksmith put a track in the floor of its Williamsburg store. Bandit’s West Village store opens at 7am and sells coffee. Salomon picked Spring Street for its first US store. The Brooklyn Half is now the biggest half marathon in the country, and the neighborhoods where the finishers live are the same blocks where the stores are.

The formula

The look is performance minimalism. Dark base, technical fabric that’s obviously good, split shorts or half tights, no shouting logos, and one thing that pops. TheRunDrop described New York this year as longer shorts, visible bra straps, matching sets, and technical fabrics done well. Less gym legging, more intentional. I think that’s right.

The one rule: matching set, or mismatch that is clearly on purpose. Mismatch by accident is the only real mistake.

Bottoms

Split shorts are in every trend report for 2026 and on every bridge at 6am. On women they’re mostly 3 inch, on men the 5 inch splits with a real notch. Bandit’s Vento and RipSpeed, Tracksmith’s Twist and Session, and LSKD’s Accelerate 3 if you want the look at a friendlier price.

The bigger change is half tights on everyone. Two years ago a half tight was a track meet thing. Now New Balance sells one as an NYC Marathon product, Bandit’s 7-pocket half tight is what everyone carrying gels is in, and every small label launched one this year. My rule: half tights under about 50 degrees, for long runs, or when I need storage. Splits for speed and heat.

For easy days the 7 inch pocketed short with a compression liner is the workhorse. LSKD’s Rep 7 and Bandit’s Stamina 7 live here, and it’s what I’m in most mornings.

Tops

The most New York thing happening in women’s running right now is pockets in tops. Bandit’s Stamina Race Crop has three phone sized pockets, two under the arm and one at the back, and it shows up in every roundup for a reason. When you run alone there’s nobody to hand your phone to, so a top that carries it is not a gimmick. Lululemon followed with its elite developed bras and 7-pocket waistbands. Satisfy, which was a men’s brand for years, launched its first sports bra in June. The indie labels are finally building women’s lines because women are now 53 percent of US race finishers.

Visible bra straps under a loose tank are the default. Shelf-bra tanks like LSKD’s Base and Flow lines are the easy version.

Color

Black and earth tones still own the base layer. The accents this fall are poppy red, oxblood, acid green and butter yellow. Bandit’s fall palette is literally Black, NY Navy, Champagne, Poppy and Ink Blue. Lululemon’s fall run collection went preppy, Oxford Red and Clubhouse Blue with racing stripes, which is a completely different mood from the Satisfy crowd and still shows up constantly on the Central Park loop.

New Balance’s NYC Marathon collection, out this month, is 1978 inspired wheat paste poster prints, so expect a retro track moment through November.

The accessories that give you away

  • Crew socks, worn loud. Bandit socks are the New York tell. Most runners default to crew height now and nobody is hiding them.
  • A 5-panel cap. Ciele GOCap is the standard. Minted NY’s mesh 5-panel is the Brooklyn upgrade.
  • Sport shields. District Vision’s Junya Racer if you have the budget, Oakley Radar if you race, Goodr if you’re normal. I’m in the Radars every day and they get their own post. [FILL: one line on why.] Wraparounds crossed into streetwear this year so nobody looks at you weird anymore.
  • Belt or vest. SPIbelt or FlipBelt on the road, Salomon Adv Skin 12 for long runs. More on all of that in the Carry section.

Brands I keep seeing

  • The fashion crowd: Satisfy, Bandit, Tracksmith, Soar, District Vision, Norda, Ciele. These brands show at Paris Fashion Week next to Lemaire now. Nike Alphaflys as a status object even on easy runs.
  • The sports crowd: Lululemon, Alo, Gymshark, Vuori, LSKD. Lululemon is still the most common women’s brand on any route I run. LSKD is the one to watch. It’s growing fast in the US, its pocketed Rep shorts have thousands of reviews, and it costs a lot less than Lululemon.
  • Brooklyn locals: Miler, Minted, Homerun, Minor Planet, Pruzan. If you see it and can’t place it, it’s one of these.

What I’m wearing this fall

If I were building a rotation from zero and wanted it to look right on the bridge at 6am without spending Satisfy money: a Bandit Stamina short for the pockets, LSKD Rep 7 for easy days, one split short for workouts, a shelf-bra tank, crew socks, a 5-panel, and sunglasses I won’t cry about losing. Then one loud color, and stop. Sizes for all of it are on the sizing page.
