The Megablast is my everyday shoe. I pre-ordered it the second they announced it, because they were advertising it as really soft and really soft is my whole thing. It came. I went for the first run. I almost cried. I was so happy. That shoe is so, so good.

The foam

Soft, and responsive at the same time, which is rare. Most soft shoes are dead. This one gives back. I’ll say it feels a little firmer to me now than it did in February, but I think that’s only in comparison to the Superblast 3, which has an even softer foam. On its own the Megablast is still the softest thing I want to run 15 miles in.

The upper is a race shoe

There’s no extra padding anywhere. The top is that meshy race-shoe material, so the whole shoe is light and in the summer it’s so breathable. You get a race-shoe upper sitting on a huge pile of foam. That combination is why it works for everything.

What I wear it for

Almost all of my runs. My longer easy runs, and all of my easy runs are longer, they’re all over 10 miles, so I’m always in the Megablast. I can pick up the pace in it, a couple of miles at marathon pace is fine, and I can also trot at 9 minute pace and it still feels great. It doesn’t care what you’re doing.

Versus the Superblast 3

The Superblast 3 foam is really, really nice, upgraded, arguably better than this. I still don’t wear it, because of how it fits my foot. The whole story is in that review. The short version: the Megablast fits me perfectly and the Superblast 3 rolls me outward. Fit beats foam.

Versus the Gel-Nimbus

The Nimbus was my everyday shoe before this. I haven’t worn it in a year. Still a great shoe, just not as light, not as breathable, not as responsive.

Fit

Size 8, same as all my ASICS. [FILL: anything about width, heel, lacing.]

The colorway problem

I’ve bought the white Megablast seven times. Seven. I rotate between the white with red accents and the plain white, because I already did the green ones and the purple ones and the black ones, and the blue and yellow ones are really ugly. Meanwhile the Superblast 3 colorways are crushing every other shoe on the market. ASICS, I am begging you, put the Superblast 3 colors on the Megablast.

Would I buy it again

I have. Seven times. Obviously.

Questions I get

Is the ASICS Megablast soft?

Very. The first run I almost cried. It feels a little firmer to me now, but only because the Superblast 3 foam is softer. It's soft and responsive at the same time, which is the trick.

Megablast or Superblast 3?

Megablast for my foot. The Superblast 3 foam is arguably nicer, but its outer forefoot sits lower and rolls me outward. The Megablast fits me perfectly, so it wins.

What is the Megablast good for?

Long easy runs, which for me is every easy run, they're all over 10 miles. I can drop to marathon pace for a few miles in it or trot at 9 minute pace and it feels great either way.

Is the Megablast breathable?

The most breathable daily trainer I've worn. The upper is race-shoe mesh with no padding. In summer that matters more than anything.
